Mosaic courses in 2011

“Increasing your potential: different projects and mosaic techniques”

In this case, the word ‘mosaic’ is to be taken literally, not in figuratively. Except, perhaps, in describing the great diversity of participants in the classes, who come from all over the world for the techniques taught. Catherine Juge, the mosaicist, trained in Ravenna, world capital of mosaic art and treasure chest of Romans and Byzantine knowhow.

Art therapy, creation, architecture, decoration: mosaics lend themselves to numerous activities. Whether abstract or figurative they hope to be visually attractive. But every image hides a message. A mosaic is not only a collection of fragments – tesserae, as professional mosaicists call them – but also of signifiers which disclose ideas and express thoughts as well as embellishing objects.

Courses

Please contact me for details of 1, 2 or 3-day courses.

From age 16, for beginners and experienced mosaicists

The participants can choose their technique:

Antique Portrait

We will provide a model, antique copy or similar.

Elaboration of a Modern Face

You will be asked to bring a photo of a face.

You will use the direct method on the final support, which guarantees a spontaneous look to the mosaic. You will be able to choose between various materials: marble, smaltis, hard-fired stonewares, mosaic glass, etc.

Or a mosaic sculpture

After having created your support (wood, mesh covered in plaster, or polystyrene), you will use the direct method with diverse materials, such as marble, smaltis, pebbles, slate etc.

Please ask for our brochure

Courses last for three days and cost 250 € (including materials)

How can the creation of a mosaic teach us craftsmanship ?

By familiarising us with the various materials used
The participants are encouraged to understand the different materials used, to investigate their feel, to enter into contact with them.

By providing a concrete objective
With an aim in mind, the participants can focus their attention and energy on the path to be taken, like a walker who sets himself a target to motivate his muscles.

By indicating the paths to be taken
The creation of a mosaic involves many steps. You must know how to break and cut; then how to glue the fragments together again to make a particular shape; how to add movement to the fragments; and how to blend the colours.

Examples of projects which can be undertaken during the course: wall decoration, mosaic on stone or wood, garden ornaments made of a sculpture covered in mosaic, etc. Both individual and group working are possible.
